In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, three Harvard University students, launched a Web site designed to put students in touch with one another, share their photos and meet with new people. They called it thefacebook.com, and before long the site became extremely popular on the Harvard campus. A month after the site launched, the creators expanded it to include students from Stanford, Columbia and Yale. In 2005, students in 800 college networks across the US could join the network, and its membership grew more than 5 million active users. In August, 2005, the site's name changed to Facebook. Facebook was originally intended for college students, but today anyone can join the network, where users can post comments, share photographs and link to new or other interesting content on the Web, play games, chat live, and stream live video. Facebook also can use as learning media.

Unfortunately, Facebook is threatened to be blocked in Indonesia due to data leakage issue as well as indication as media to spread hate and provocation as seen in cases that happen in Myanmar. Whether this plan will still be carried on is still unknown.

BASIC FUNCTION

Facebook is a social media that has a variety of very interesting features, not only as a communication tool, we can also share thoughts with other users, stream live video, share photos, share information, play games, share notes, and can also join with various group or even create own group. That's why Facebook is very suitable for learning media in class, especially English classroom. The teacher can create a group for his class and invite all his students to join in the group. Then the teacher can distribute material or even tasks of their class, teachers can also share English videos or links. All students who have joined the group will see all posts made by their teacher. Students can also participate by giving comments or add something they think interesting to increase their knowledge about English. they can also ask questions with their teachers.

Make sure all students already have their own Facebook account 2. create a closed group 3. Teachers invite all students in the class to be incorporated in the group that has been created 4. Upload course material 5. Open a question-and-answer session between students and teachers if any of the teaching materials are not understood 6. Share your class schedule in groups, for example the task collection schedule, the exam schedule, etc. 7. Share the video, picture or else that related to your course. 8. Improve your students skill with play Facebook games, for example Criminal Case games. Criminal Case games can help your students know the new word that they search when they finish the case.

1. Go to www.facebook.com/r.php. 2. Enter your name, email or mobile number, password, birth date, and gender. 3. Click Create Account. 4. To complete account creation, you must confirm your email or mobile phone number. Note: You must be 13+ years old to create a Facebook account.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

As we know, today almost everyone in the world has their own Facebook account. What are the disadvantages and advantages of using Facebook in English classroom?

Advantages

There are some advantages of using Facebook in English classroom, such as: 1. Teacher more be easier to share about materials and tasks, video, photos, etc. Students also be easy to chat with their friends and it be more interactive. 2. Save money because it does not need to print out if there are tasks or learning materials just access Facebook and do it on Facebook. 3. It can be more easier to do tasks or learn anywhere. Not only at school when students can not attend class for some reason, they can still follow the lesson by accessing their Facebook. It also can be more easier for teacher when they can not come to the class, they still can post learning material and tasks on Facebook. 4. It is also interesting because with play Facebook games, students will know a new words from the games and it can help them be easy to remember the new words that their found from the games.

Disadvantages

There are some disadvantages of using Facebook in English classroom, such as: 1. Not all teachers can access Facebook especially old teacher. 2. Internet Connection. Not all school have internet access especially the schools that located in the villages 3. Sometimes the task is dormant because it is more busy playing or chatting with friends up 4. Pornography. The absence of content filters provided by the Facebook make social networking inhabited children and adults mixed up. Content that should be seen by adults instead seen by children or adolescents.
